Thomas Corfield was a mining engineer. He moved to Llanidloes where he was probably involved in the lead mining industry of the late 19th century there. He then moved to the West Indies and lived in St Kitts and later at Cul de Sac, outside Phillipsburg on the island of St Maarten where he died.
His occupation in the West Indies was working as Superintendant of the Island of Sombrero where he was mining guano. (Phosphates)
There is a monument to his memory and to his wife in the cemetery at Wigan, Lancs.

He left £994 in his will directing that £100 should go to each of his children.
Executor - Mary Emma Corfield, Great Oak, Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire.

His death certificate was issued in Philipsburg in Sint Maarten.
This document was issued in Dutch. It translates as:
"One thousand eight hundred and eighty five.
As representatives of the government of this island .
The persons of Nathaniel Hutchinson Mac Girk
Occupation: Government Physician aged: fifty four years of Philipsburg,
and Abraham Jan Cornelis Brouwer,
Occupation: Civil Servant, aged twenty one years,
have reported that in Philipsburg in 16th October of the year One thousand eight hundred and eighty five
at ten minutes to twelve in the evening has died

at the age of thirty nine years.
Son of Thomas John Tressider Corfield and (Forename unknown) Skinner.
Born in England in the province of Cornwall.

Thomas married Mary Emma PEARCE, daughter of William PEARCE and Elizabeth Ann WOTTON, in 1869. (Mary Emma PEARCE was born on 3 Jan 1847 in Liskeard, Cornwall., christened on 7 Feb 1847 in Wesleyan Chapel, Goat Street, Swansea, died on 18 May 1903 in Wigan 4 5 and was buried in Wigan, Lancs.)
