Born in Truro, by 1841 he was living in Fore Street, St Day, Cornwall with his mother, his father having died.
By 1851 he had moved to Church Street, St. Day, Cornwall at what is now number 12 where he operated a pharmaceutical chemists. It was there that he lived and had his 14 children.
In the mid 19th century St Day was in the middle of a boom time with the surrounding area being mined for minerals, mainly copper and tin. This boom time was short lived and towards the end of the 19th century mines started to close and amalgamate. The last mine closed in the 1991.
The current owner of 12 Church Street (2007), who is 80, can remember talking to elderly villagers in the 1960 who could remember having their teeth pulled by John Corfield, as he was known, without anaesthetic.
(In the 1871 census he is described as a Chemist.)
His estate on his death was valued at £3562.
