Walter Tibbits was killed during a raid on the night of 25th February 1944. He was one of the crew of a Stirling bomber of 149 Squadron RAF based at RAF Lakenheath in Norfolk. Stirling bombers were involved in mine laying over Kiel that night. Two Stirlings failed to return. The 25th February 1944 was the night after a new moon, a dark night, and a mid-air collision cannot be ruled out.
