Ralph de Corve took possession of Corfield village from Robert son of Nicholas Brockton in 1180. The land deed is the first mention of Corfield by name, which Ralph's descendants assumed as their surname.

"Let it be known, both now and in the future, that I, Robert son of Nicholas, yield Corve, the woods, the fields, the meadows and the water, as well as anything else, which had belonged to me, to Ralph, son of Edward, and his heirs, in [feudal] inheritance for ever, on behalfof me and my heirs, free and exempt from all service as required for the sum of 15 shillings and in exchange for homage which he must give me, and two silver pieces which he gave, and to which my wife affirms."
