Richard Corfield ran the iron works in Coalbrookdale and the five nearby iron forges.
One historian mentions that Richard Corfield and Thomas Dawsett held the freehold of Coalbrookdale which was sold to Abraham Darby, a Bristol ironfounder, by 1708.
The furnace for the ironworks had been built in 1638 and it was probably in 1695 that Richard Corfield bought the leases on the ironworks and some forges.
Of the three major forges in the area Richard controlled the upper and lower ones, the middle one having been destroyed in a flood.
Hannah Rose wrote that Laurance Wellington 'held' all three forges, although the Corfields controlled them in 1715.
