bullet  General Notes:

Ruxton Corfield served in the Royal Engineers in the Mesopotanian Campaign of the First World War. He was in the Expeditionary Force of British and Indian soldiers that was sent from India to attack the Turks in present day Iraq. Despite defeating a Turkish army twice the size of his forces at Ctesiphon (16 miles from Baghdad), General Sir Charles Townsend, the British Commander, was forced to retreat to the town of Kut with over half his army either dead or badly wounded. There they were besieged by the Turks from 5th December, with 26,000 men lost in bungled attempts to relieve the town. There was even an attempt to bribe the Turkish Commander with T.E. Lawrence (later Lawrence of Arabia) sent as a middleman. The garrison surrendered on 29th April 1916 and were held as prisoners of war.
After the war Ruxton returned to India was a Major in the Engineers. He then joined the Nizam's State Railways.
He died aged 65.
