Baptised by his uncle Ashley. Educated at Repton. (Hall house) from January 1906 to July 1909. Before WWI Richard Fitzherbert 'Dick' Corfield went out to British Columbia in Canada and prospected for gold and worked as lumberjacks etc. They were later joined by their younger brother Ralph and also Margaret. With the outbreak of the First World War, 'Dick' enlisted in the services, being commissioned in June 1915 in the Royal Field Artillery. He was posted to India, 1915-16 and then to Mesopotamia 1916-1917 where he was Forward Observation Officer with the 2nd Battalion Black Watch. He was severely wounded and sent to hospital in Bombay. There he met Elizabeth Ryman Smith who had trained as a nurse at Guy's Hospital in London. After the War, Dick was posted to an artillery unit in Nowshera on the Northwest Frontier and took part in the 3rd Afghan War. He then returned to Canada to Parkville, Vancouver with his wife. In 1928, after having little success with farming he returned with his wife and son to England. In the Second World War 'Dick' was declared unfit for service due to the wounds he received in WWI but 'dragooned' the War Office into taking him back, serving in an AckAck Training unit in Devizes.
