General Notes:
John moved with his brother Lionel to south Wales where they entered business. He worked for a short period with the London and North Western Railway at Llanelly, and for a few years at the Landore steelworks, before becoming works manager of Dillwyn & Co., later promoted to Managing Director. In 1892 Lewis Llewellyn Dillwyn died leaving Dillwyn & Co, spelter manufacturers, in poor finacial shape. His daughter Amy, however, resolved to rebuild the company and made John corfield a partner with her in appreciation of his loyalty to the company. She wrote that John 'puts in no capital but fully deserves what I have given him for the way he has worked for me and stcuk to me since Papa's death, besides deserving it for himself for his excellence as a manager'. This partnership agreement was signed on 31st August 18197, John receiving a salary of £500 paid quarterly. However when his 'quarter share of the profits exceeded the amount of his annual salary then the first £250 of his share of the annual profit was to be regarded as half his annual salary'. The company prospered and John became the first Managing Director of the company in 1902 with a salary of £1000. with the outbreak of the First World War the company managed to win important war contracts. However on 24th April 1917 John collapsed while going to the London and Metropolitan Bank in Wind Street, Swansea and died at home that evening.
John married Letitia Ann JONES in 1881 in Swansea. (Letitia Ann JONES was born in 1861 in London.,2 died on 22 Mar 1948 and was buried in Oystermouth Cemetery..)
