Educated at the C.M.S. School, Batala, India.
In about 1904 Bernard came back from India to attend St Lawrence College, Ramsgate, an evangelical Public School founded in 1879. He left in 1909 and went to Jesus College, Cambridge where graduated with a BA in 1912
During the First World War Bernard enlisted with Royal Field Artillery and was twice mentioned in despatches.
Bernard returned to England after the war and obtained his MA in 1919, before proceeding to Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and followed his father and grandfather into the priesthood, being ordained in 1920. Soon after his marriage he went back to India and was Principal of Baring School, Batala in the North West Frontier Province, 1920-28 as a member of the CMS, initially as a missionary, later as a staff member. He had become a priest in 1922 in Lahore and after he left Baring School he went 'on furlough' 1928-29.
Later he moved to Dera Ismail Khan where he was based from 1930 to 1934, and then back to Batala 1934 to 35.
Bernard returned to England in 1935 to become Vicar of Christ Church, Lower Nutfield, Surrey, from 1935 to 1938. However in March 1938 following the resignation of Rt Rev E A L Moore, Bishop of Travancore and Cochin, Bernard was appointed to the post, thus returning to India again. He held the post of Bishop of Travancore and Cochin until 1944. He was consecrated Bishop in Madras Cathedral on 18th October 1938 and so became the Rt Rev Bernard Corfield.
In 1944, before the end of the war, he returned to England again, to become Rector of Stratfield Saye from 1944 to 1950 and then Rector of St Lawrence and St Maurice, Winchester from 1950 until his deth in 1965.
