General Notes:
Educated at his father's old school, St Lawrence, Ramsgate. Served in World War 2 from 1942 firstly with the Royal Engineers and then with the 2/5th Royal Gurkha Rifles (Frontier Force) as Captain. The force was based in Abottabad. He served mainly in Burma, the brigade losing 800 men at Kohima between March and June 1944 and then the brigade later joined the Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan. At the end of the war John went to Jesus College, Cambridge, the same college his father went to, and there he obtained a BA in 1949 and an MA in 1951. After graduating he became a schoolmaster from 1950 to 1964. In 1964 John went to Ridley Hall, Cambridge, becoming a deacon in 1966 and in 1967 he was ordained into the Priesthood as his father, grandfather and great grandfather had before him. From 1966 to 1969 he was curate at Hinton St John's (Diocese of Ely), becoming a priest in charge and Vicar of of St Paul's, Bledlow Ridge, High Wycombe from 1971 to 1975, where he lived. He was also concurrently Rector of Bradenham. He then moved to be incumbent at Sherringham-with-Chicheley, North Crawley and neighbouring parishes from 1975 to 1982, and incumbent at Terrington St Clements, Kings Lynn, Norfolk from 1982.
