General Notes:
John Cornfield is celebrated for his "Allan Chace" and other poems which was published in London in 1877.
Arthur Mee in his account of Sedgley wrote:
"Hereabouts were born two poets of country fame who lived on to our own time, David Bailey........and John Cornfield, a Radical reformer, a brickmaker, pawn broker and eccentric member of the Board of Guardians which sat at Dudley. John Cornfield was found drowned on his estate and left behind this verse among his writings:
'So man comes forth a peevish April fool: In vain pursuits oft wastes his life away: Fain would he take from heaven its sovereign rule, And have unclouded sunshine every day. Forgets that summer's bounteous crops depend On winter's rigour and the stormy blast, That they who sow in tears til life shall end, Shall reap with joy in summer-land at last.' "
