Charles became 2nd Lieut, 25th Foot (King's Own Scottish Borderers) 4th December 1878; served at the Khyber Pass and the Secnd Afghan War (1878-80); being promoted Lieut, 7th August 1880; Captain, 4th December 1889; Major, 4th December 1898, Indian Staff Corps; Assistant-Commissioner General 3rd Class, seconded from the 25th Foot, Rawalpindi; and Lieut Colonel, 4th December 1904 retiring 6 years later.
