John and Mary moved to Stirchley where collieries and ironworks were located. A canal had been built in the 18th century to service light industries, and it was in the tunnel to this canal that the couple lived in 1841.
Soon afterwards they benefited from the sub-dividing of several farms and John worked as a butcher and farmer.
