Charles Edwin Anthony CORFIELD ¹

Charles Edwin Anthony Corfield was commissioned 15th February 1941, 1/4th Punjabis, going to Malaya 4th March. After the Japanese invasion of Malaya in December 1941, Charles fought at the Golkunda Rubber Estate, Kuala Selangor where he was badly wounded. He escaped to Singapore which surrendered on 15th February 1942 and so he became a prisoner of war in Changi and worked on the Burma-Siam railway.
In September 1945 Charels was posted back to India , 9/14th Punjabis and with Indian independence in 1947 opted to serve in India becoming a Major in the 6/8 Ghurka Rifles. On the re-organisation of the Indian Army in 1952 he was posted to the Rajput Regiment Centre subsequently joining the 2nd Rajputs serving in Jammu and Kashmir, August 1954, briefly commanding the Battalion as Major, being wounded on 11th March 1956 in the India-Pakistan War. On 28th September 1956 he was the guest of honour a the annual dinner of the Rajputs at the United Services Club in London. He was transferred in 1957 to the Simla Hills. He then served in Nagaland and left the Army on 1st April 1967. He then joined Warner Hindustan, a pharmaceutical company as security officer, retiring on 12th June 1980. He and his wife were still living at Tiger Hall, Secunderabad in 1991.
Another source gives his rank in the army as Lieutenant Colonel.

Charles married Blossom Hyacinth TORPY, daughter of William TORPY and Unknown, on 10 Jul 1958.
