Emigrated to Australia with an assisted passage on the "Clyde" which left Portsmouth 20th January 1879 and arriving in Sydney on 3rd April 1879.

In Australia Matthew became a member of the Royal Eureka Lodge of the MUIOOF (Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows) and became a congregationalist.
