Walter Francis Corfield went to Westminster School from 1893 to 1898 and on leaving went to University College Hospital gaining his MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons) and LRCP (Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians) London in 1904. MB and BS (Lond) in 1907; gaining a DPH (Cantab) in 1908. He became a doctor in 1911 when he wrote a paper on "Tuberculosis in the Borough of Colchester". In that year he also wrote "Control of Pulmonary Tuberculosis" which was published in the Journal of the Royal Sanitary Institute. Walter served as a Medical Officer of Health, School Medical Officer, Public Analyst, Tuberculosis Officer and Medical Superintendant at Colchester. During the First World War he served in Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine, becoming acting Major RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps) on 29th May 1918 and DADMS (Deputy Assistant Director Medical Services) in the 54th (East Anglian) Division. He was mentioned in despatches on the 14th June 1918. As a result of his experiences during the War he wrote "Experiments upon control of Fly-Breeding in Camp Areas", published in the Journal of the RAMC in 1919. After the War he worked at the Borough Isolation Hospital and Sanitorium, and Maternity Home, Colchester; becoming a Fellow of the Medical Office of Health and the Royal Sanitary Institute; and Member of the Colchester Medical Society. Walter was an Assistant Bacteriologist and a House Physician at the University College Hospital Medical School.
