Richard Corfield was educated at Shrewsbury School.
He left England for Mexico in 1829 and in the following year moved to Santa Marta in Columbia on the Carribean. There he met his future wife. Soon after their marriage Richard and Theresa moved to Valparaiso in Chile. In 1834 and 1835 Charles Darwin stayed with the Corfields in Valparaiso, Richard and Charles were friends while they were at Shrewsbury although Charles Darwin was two years his junior.
Richard lived in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires (1856-1868) and Madrid (1870-1883). He was secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society at Rio, Buenos Aires and Madrid.
