Richard Corfield entered the army as a lieutenant in the 23rd Foot (Royal Welsh Fusiliers). This regiment saw action in the Seven Years War (1756-1763) in Germany where they had been sent to secure British/Hanoverian and Prussian interests.
Soon after the war ended Richard sold his commission and obtained a post in the Customs and Excise, being Surveyor General of Excise at Plymouth and Penryn in 1771.
For many years Richard commanded a gunboat on the South Coast to track and board the ships of smugglers and was 'remarkable for his height and strength'.
On the night of 9th December 1788 a party of smugglers attacked the family's house in Penryn and Elizabeth, aged 15, was killed by a stone thrown by the smugglers. Her father and her eldest brother, John, chased the attackers and shot four of them.

Richard married Susannah WILMOT, daughter of William Henry WILMOT and Unknown, on 4 Nov 1765 in St Luke, Finsbury, Middlesex. (Susannah WILMOT was born on 3 May 1745 and died on 17 Jul 1801.)
