TOWN'S GRAND OLD LADY PASSES ON. Much sorrow will be expressed at the news of the passing of Mrs. Jane Taylor, who at the age of 98 was the oldest person in Mansfield. For years she had astonished her family and friends by her vigour and her continued interest in the passing scene. In 1950 she attended the Summer Show, and knowledgeably inspected the exhibits displayed by the firm of which she was partner, James Maude and Co. Ltd. In October last year she was present at the Harvest Festival service in St. Peter's Church, and attended again on the Sunday before Christmas. It was hoped by all her friends that she would be among them for many years, and indeed it seemed likely that she would make her century, for in the weeks previous to Christmas she was busily engaged in making presents for her family and wide circle of friend. Tatting, which she was doing, was one of her main interests, and through the years she had attained a remarkable degree of efficiency in this old craft. Many of the articles which she made were sold to raise money for Dr. Barnado's Homes. Mrs. Taylor was born at Hyde, Cheshire, and came to Mansfield 70 years ago. Her husband died in 1889, and she then took over his interests in Sherwood Foundry at Forest-road. She celebrated her 98th birthday at the home of her daughter in law, Mrs H.C. Taylor, of 1 Black Scotch-lane, Mansfield, on 1st December, and it was there she died last Thursday. Interment in Mansfield Cemetery took place on Saturday, and was preceded by a service at Black Scotch-lane, conducted by Rev. H.N. Hodd. The funeral was private and attended only by family mourners, who were Mrs. H.C. Taylor (daughter in law); Mrs. F. Williams (Daughter); Mr. and Mrs. E. Shaw-Browne (son-in-law and daughter); Mr. J. Taylor (grandson) and Mrs. Taylor; Mr. and Mrs. R. Corfield (grand-daughter).
Thefuneral arrangements were carried out by Henry Potts Ltd.
