He joined the Honourable East India Company as a cadet in 1819 and then the 24th Native Infantry (NI), a regiment raised in India and officered by Englishmen. Joseph arrived in India , 22nd January 1821and was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain.
With the outbreak of the Second Sikh War in 1848, Joseph saw action in the Punjab and was promoted to Major, 1st Native Infantry and was awarded a medal. His regiment received battle honours for the 'Punjab' 1848-49, and Joseph was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1855, before going on leave until his retirement in 1857 when he was promoted to Hon. Colonel.
On his return to England, Joseph lived at 15 The Paragon, Bath, then at 31 Henrietta Street, Bath where he died. Anobituary appearing in the Bath Chronicle, 28th April. 1881.
