He joined the Honourable East India Company as a cadet in 1819 and then the 24th Native Infantry (NI), a regiment raised in India and officered by Englishmen. Joseph arrived in India , 22nd January 1821and was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain.
• He appeared on the Colonel Retired census on 3 Apr 1881 in 31 Henrietta Street, Bath, Somerset, England. 3 • He had an estate probated on 31 May 1881 in London, England. 4 Joseph married Ann Martha POOLE, daughter of Charles POOLE and Unknown, on 8 Feb 1827 in Brighton, Sussex, England. (Ann Martha POOLE died on 17 Mar 1839 in Dekkling, Lewes, Sussex..) Joseph next married Mary HOGAN, daughter of T.C. HOGAN and Unknown, on 29 Jul 1843 in Calcutta, India.
